Something Bleu Bridal Refuses to Charge Extra for Plus-Size Wedding Dresses
Charging more for women’s clothing sizes 16+ is not at all unusual, but Saratoga Springs NY boutique Something Bleu Bridal is doing something very, very unusual: they are refusing to pass that upcharge on to their brides.
“We get charged anything from a set-fee to 15% more for sizes 16+, depending on the designer,” said Kathryn Metzler, co-owner of Something Bleu Bridal. “But it’s time the industry changed deciding who pays what based on an arbitrary cut-off - we’re just a little ahead of the curve.”
Right now the women’s clothing industry is split into two size charts: “straight” sizes (generally 0-14) and “curvy” sizes (16-32+). Many manufacturers charge a different wholesale price for the two different size charts, and most retailers don’t push back.
“We decided to throw convention out the window and take the hit to our profits for two reasons. First, our brides are important to us and treating them differently from each other based on measurements doesn’t sit well. Second, we are expanding our Something Curvy collection significantly, and we want our curvy brides to know that this collection is the best-of-the-best when it comes to wedding dress design - that we are not limiting the styles our curvy brides have access to and we are actually bringing in more designers whose collections are fashion - and curve - forward,” said Metzler.
Israeli designer Studio Levana - who not only does not charge more for curvy sizes, but designs specifically for them - will be the centerpiece of the Something Curvy collection at Something Bleu moving forward. The wedding gowns from Studio Levana’s curvy lines start at a size 14 and are available with a specially-designed, built-in corset for brides who want the support without sacrificing style on their wedding day. Being made to order, these dresses start at around $2500, but brides are saying they are worth the price tag. Other designers in the Something Curvy collection will range in price from $900-$2000.
Metzler and her business partner Marissa Mackay expect to have close to 50 dresses in the Something Curvy collection by the start of 2020 from an array of designers.

What do I love to photograph most on wedding day?
This will always be tough for me. Prep is always exciting because its a mix of emotions. Nerves, excitement, happy tears and happiness. Details are my favorite exertion of creativity and really gets my day going for me.
First looks make my heart race and I am just as nervous and excited as the couple. Plus, there is that added stress of "DON'T MISS THE SHOT!" lol The ceremony is wonderful, but honestly the guest and family reactions are what do it for me during ceremony.
The wiping of tears, big smiles, grandmas winding their disposable cameras....its what its all about. Families becoming one. Those you love celebrating by your side.
Witnessing your happiest of days. But then there are the bride and groom portraits: PROBABLY the best. I think I black out during this time of the day and go into hyper drive. I shoot like wildfire and we put all of our engagement session training into practice and I really get to reestablish that one-on-one bond with my couple that we had during their engagement session.
